Description
Carved Giltwood Framed Mirror
An antique French carved giltwood mirror in an ornate Louis XV / Baroque-style frame, with deep scrollwork, foliate carving and shell or cartouche motifs at the centres and corners. The gilt surface has a warm, worn patina with gesso and bare wood showing through in places — the kind of soft, time-worn gilding that collectors look for. Mitred wood corners, set with a mirror plate, with a later green backing board added over the reverse. A decorative, sculptural piece that works on a wall or propped on a shelf or mantel.
Details:
Estimated Origin: France
Period: Early 20th century, in the Louis XV / Baroque taste
Material: Carved wood with gilt/giltwood finish; later backing board
Condition: Good vintage condition with honest wear consistent with age — expect gilt loss, small chips and knocks to the carving, gesso and bare wood showing through, and age-related marks to the mirror plate. A later green backing board has been added over the reverse. Sold as a characterful decorative antique — please review all photos as part of the description.
Approximate Measurements: Frame 15.9" x 13.6" x 1.6" (40.5 x 34.5 x 4 cm); mirror plate 11" x 8.9" (28 x 22.5 cm)
