Description
A characterful antique French confit pot (pot à graisse) with a rich, glossy chestnut-brown glaze to the exterior and a warm ochre-glazed interior, with two sturdy lug handles. Hand-thrown in stoneware and glazed across the upper body and inside, with the lower portion and base left as exposed clay — the traditional finish for these utilitarian kitchen vessels.
Confit pots were everyday objects in rural French households, used to preserve duck and goose cooked and sealed under their own fat; the glaze ran only as far down as the pot would sit in a cool larder, leaving the base bare. A lovely sculptural piece with genuine age and use, the kind that styles beautifully on a kitchen counter or shelf
