Description
Carved Wood Architectural Fragment / Corbel
An antique French hand-carved wooden architectural fragment — a deeply carved corbel or applied ornament worked with scrolling acanthus foliage and a bird motif amid the filigree. Carved from solid wood with remnants of old polychrome, the soft green-grey paint sitting over a red-brown ground (bole) exactly as period architectural and religious carving was finished. The reverse shows hand-tool marks, old mortise and peg holes, and a forged nail — the construction of genuine antique work. A wonderfully sculptural fragment that displays beautifully standing on a shelf or mounted on a wall.
Details:
Estimated Origin: France
Period: 19th century, possibly earlier
Material: Carved wood with old polychrome remnants
Condition: Honest condition consistent with age — expect paint losses, old worm/peg holes, splits, chips and general wear to the carving. Note: the bottom of the corbel has a small amount of glue where someone had tried to attach an old piece to it or attach it to something. I hesitate to remove it so that it does not damage the wood itself. Sold as a characterful decorative antique — please review all photos as part of the description.
Approximate Measurements: 6.7" x 9.4" x 5.5" (17 x 24 x 14 cm)
