Marmalade Pot — Confitures d'Oranges Picon & Cie, Faïence de Lunéville

Highly collectable transfer-printed "Confitures d'Oranges fabriquées par Picon & Cie" with hand-coloured oranges, foliage and Art Nouveau style. Glazed earthenware with age related staining with overall fine crazing. 

These advertising pots were produced at the faïence works of Lunéville, in Lorraine — an important centre of earthenware production since the 18th century — and sold filled with jam by grocers and confiture makers around the turn of the century. The maker here was Picon & Cie, the house founded in Algeria in 1837 by Gaëtan Picon, best known for the orange-based Amer Picon aperitif, which operated until 1970. Emptied of their marmalade, pots like this were kept and reused in the kitchen — and are now collected as a piece of French epicerie history. Made to hold orange marmalade for a French maker, the pot now a beautiful decorative object.
