Cast in iron and built for the hearth, these would have sat at the front of a fireplace to support burning logs, the decorative figural fronts facing into the room while the long bars held the wood. The romantic female busts are typical of 19th-century French decorative ironwork, drawing on the Renaissance Revival and Neoclassical taste of the period.
