Glazed Stoneware Jar / Pot — French, 19th Century

An antique French wheel-thrown stoneware jar or (grès) in ovoid form with a rolled rim. Glaze finish inside and around the rim in a dark brown-black that has run in drips down the buff non-glazed exterior. Typical French village pottery — glazed only where it needed to seal for storing oil, fat or preserves. The interior shows throwing rings; the base is unglazed with old kiln grit. A beautiful sculptural country pot with strong drip character, at home on a shelf, mantel or dresser, or holding dried stems.
