French Cabinet Portrait of a Woman — Oil on Canvas

This is a cabinet portrait, a small-format oil of the kind popular in France from the 1880s through the turn of the century. Profile portraits like this, with the sitter shown side-on against a plain dark ground, drew on the formal tradition of the painted medallion and the cameo, and were often commissioned privately as a keepsake rather than as a public exhibition piece. The careful treatment of the face and the single diamond earring suggest a specific, real sitter, and the inscription on the reverse (possibly a name) points to exactly that kind of personal commission. Small enough to sit on a mantel or hang in an intimate room, it was made to be a keepsake portrait.

The reverse wooden frame bears an old handwritten inscription that appears to read ‘Francis’ (see last photo) — likely the sitter’s name

Condition: Honest condition consistent with age — expect overall fine craquelure, light grime, minor paint wear, and losses, chips and rubbing to the gilt frame. Canvas sound on its keyed stretcher. Seen in photos the frame is not perfect in it's edges matching and you can seen in a photo a slight crack of light through the corner. Not the frame is incredibly sturdy and this does not affect it. Please review all photos as part of the description.
