French Cast Iron Figural Andirons (Chenets) — Pair

A characterful pair of antique French cast iron andirons (chenets), each modelled as the bust of a young woman with long flowing hair and a beaded headband or diadem, rising from a stepped plinth above a horizontal log bar. Cast in iron and built for the hearth, these would have sat at the front of a fireplace to support burning logs, the decorative figural fronts facing into the room while the long bars held the wood. The romantic female busts are typical of 19th-century French decorative ironwork, drawing on the Renaissance Revival and Neoclassical taste of the period. A wonderful sculptural pair with deep age and a richly rusted, time-worn surface.

Condition: Honest condition consistent with age and use at the hearth. Both busts show heavy oxidation, surface rust and pitting, with traces of old paint or verdigris in places. There appears to be casting/seam separation at the necks (visible in photos). Structurally sound as decorative objects.
