Large Ochre Glazed Terracotta Water Jug

A characterful antique French water jug (gargoulette) from the south of France, with the distinctive ochre-mustard glaze and warm bare terracotta body that collectors associate with rustic Provençal and southwestern pottery. Hand-thrown in earthenware and partially dipped in a rich honey-ochre glaze over the upper body, it has the classic gargoulette form — a rounded body, an arched carrying handle over the top, a small side handle, a pouring spout, and a separate filling mouth.

This design kept drinking water cool through slow evaporation against the porous unglazed clay, an ingenious method perfected over centuries of southern French living. An everyday object in rural households, it would have carried and cooled water during work in the fields and vineyards — the arched top handle made for carrying or hanging, the spout for drinking and pouring.

Condition: Honest condition consistent with age and rustic use. Expect glaze loss, flaking and crazing where the ochre meets the bare clay, small chips, surface mineral deposits and general wear (visible on the spout tip and glaze edges).
