Green-Glazed Terracotta Oil Jug / Cruche — French, 19th Century

An antique French terracotta oil or water jug (cruche à huile) with a rounded body, single strap handle and small pouring spout. The upper third is dipped in a deep bottle-green lead glaze that pools and drips down over the bare red terracotta, the lower body left unglazed and worn to a soft earthen patina from generations of use. Wheel-thrown in warm red clay, with heavy mineral deposits, firing marks and old wear that give it real presence. A sculptural piece of French country pottery, striking on a shelf, table or mantel.
