French White Confit Pot
Description
An antique French confit pot (pot à confit) of ovoid form with a pair of loop handles at the shoulder and a wide mouth. Glazed in a soft creamy white tin/lead glaze over a warm buff earthenware body, the glaze finely crazed and age-toned, the unglazed foot showing the bare clay. Traditionally these were glazed only on the upper body, the lower half left bare to sit in the cool of a larder while storing preserved meat.
A sculptural piece of French country pottery, lovely on a shelf, table or dresser, or for floral arrangements.
