Description

Antique French Glazed Terracotta Milk Bowl / Tian à Lait — 19th Century

An antique French glazed terracotta milk bowl (tian à lait or jatte), in rectangle form with a pouring lip at one end. Glazed inside in a deep ocher-amber glaze that pools and crazes over the sides, the exterior left mostly bare with smoke-clouding and fire marks from the kiln and a worn, unglazed base. Wheel-thrown in warm clay and used in the dairy to let cream rise before skimming. Rich patina throughout.

A sculptural piece of French country pottery, striking as a fruit or bread bowl, a catchall, or displayed on a shelf, table or dresser. I personally see this on a long farm table to mimic it's shape with mounds of fruit.
